In 2000, MC's Zach Miller and Brody Wehman from Ashland, Virginia formed the hip-hop group Synthesis. Working alongside guitarists Jake Williamson and Matt Blanton, as well as drummer Jesse Isenberg, Synthesis released the 6-track EP Zuzu's Petals in 2001. Comprised completely of live instrumentation and vocals from both emcees, Hip Hop Infinity reviewed and rated Zuzu's Petals highly. Synthesis followed their EP release with several packed performances including Sweetwater in Richmond, VA and a sold-out show at Ashland Coffee & Tea.
Later that year, Zach and Brody moved to Harrisonburg, VA to attend James Madison University. While at JMU, they founded a spoken word club that brought poets and emcees together, performing everything from slam poetry to freestyle acapellas. Throughout college, Synthesis performed at various JMU events, including 'Take Back The Night' and the JMU Talent Jam, where they were awarded Third Place for a spoken word performance piece. Zach also participated in the annual Circles emcee battle in 2003. Brody continued his creative efforts as well, and in 2007 received an Honorable Mention in the William Carlos Williams National Poetry Competition. As a result he was invited to perform the piece at Hiram College in Columbus, Ohio.
In late 2009 and with the addition of Manny Arora, an up-and-coming producer from Maryland, Synthesis found itself back in the studio and recording new music once again. Manny began his career in music as a rapper but transitioned into beat production and audio engineering full time upon graduating from the University of Maryland and the Omega Studios' School of Applied Recording Arts and Sciences.
Synthesis released their Lead Me Back EP on March 29, 2010 and their full length album Spotlight was released on May 5, 2010.
